ARCHITECTURE DESIGN

STUDIO I

This module introduces the principles and methods of analysis, abstraction, and synthesis in design thinking that are common to many design fields, including building and architecture. The key emphasis of the studio is “User and Context”, which investigates the relationship between user and natural environment. In this studio, we will undertake a series of studio-based exercises; firstly, an investigation of the architectural spaces through prototype studies; and secondly, an exploration of form and space through architectural conceptualization. Finally, design a small freestanding building that meets user requirements and engages with the site context.

MODULE OUTLINE

Architectural Design Studio 1 is structured as an introduction to architectural design.

This preliminary design module aims to present and explains design through the expression of the perception of ‘self’ and the body.

Students will undertake a series of studio-based exercises and assignments that introduces the fundamental methods, principles and approaches in design thinking and basic spatial design.

PROJECT 1 : REPRESENTING ME

BOARDS & MODELS

The purpose of this assignment is to investigate how spaces are created from the making of architectural elements: architectonics - solid, planes, lines and frames.

Upon completion of the assignment students should be able to achieve a level of understanding on the works assigned and will be able to apply the idea and concept in the subsequent project.

The idea of using pure and diagrammatic models to express the architectural idea would also be in cooperated into this assignment.

1. Ability to identify architects and their works

2. Ability to ‘diagram’ and analyse architectural work of selected architect

3. Understanding basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frames.

My group-mates are Yong Zhi Kang, Lim Zhi Kang, Terence Thia, Ng Yu Jie, Lock Tian Jun, and Tan Yow Hue. The building we got is Acharapan House, Thailand, by Boonlert Hemvijitraphan.

We have to produce a complete set of architectural drawings (scale of 1:100) and required to investigate & formulate our findings into a set of 10 analysis diagrams and 10 diagrammatic models (8 x 8 x 8 cm).

The purpose of the project is for students to unravel their creative side and inner self through several specific modes of communication or art form.

We as designers will generate ideas from self-identity through personal interests, preferences, attitude and personality. We are encouraged to explore many forms of art work, be it a poster, an object, table cloth, decorative items, light installation, etc., to show self.

Representation of self must only be interpreted in abstracted form where in it requires rigorous design thinking and highest form of creative interpretation.
